Music Written, Arranged & Performed by YUNIS Mixed & Mastered by VII This work is a part of «Orouj» Project - Music/Visual Dance Performance WIP 2022 • “Orouj” is a music/visual dance performance founded on the progressive structure rooted in spiritual music, much like that is found in Zār music and Sufi Mawlids. The project mainly focuses on Takhmir (intoxication/musical ecstasy) songs, which are – as defined by the Egyptian heritage researcher Shawki Abdel Hakim – traditional folk songs sung by people in rural Egypt during exorcisms of spirits or jinn, a practice more commonly known as the Zār. These songs are characterized by having an unparalleled and exciting structure that kicks off with a calm, steady cadence and light rhythmic strokes, gradually progressing into their climax: a louder harmony of tambourines, singing, and wailing.
