Prince Philip Inspects the Gurkhas in British Hong Kong (1986)
On 23 October 1986, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh inspected the large contingent of Gurkha troops stationed in Hong Kong. The Gurkha Brigade band welcomed the Duke with a fanfare of bagpipes and a wreath of flowers.
Still a dependent territory of the UK, Hong Kong would remain so for another 11 years until 1997, when it was “handed over“ to the People’s Republic of China. The Duke’s visit to the Gurkhas took place during a visit to the island by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
