We demonstrate the effects of coefficient quantization in Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters using several examples. Then, we discuss what options you have to improve your FIR filter design, given limited-precision coefficients. Finally, we develop a rule-of-thumb for estimating the required coefficient precision, and lay out a set of guidelines for working interactively with ScopeFIR or another FIR filter design tool to arrive at an optimal limited-precision FIR filter design for your application.
