Gusty storm in the Phoenix area that flipped planes at Mesa airport
After a series of thunderstorms moved through parts of the valley during the evening, the chance of a repeat storm in the greater Phoenix area was possible in the afternoon.
The storms wreaked havoc in parts of the valley in the evening, bringing torrential rain, hail and high winds, causing temporary school closures and forcing airplanes at Falcon Field Airport in Mesa to take to the air.
“We had quite a bit of activity last night,“ Young said. “At this point we were seeing reports of wind gusts of 70 to 80 miles per hour. There were also reports of hail, looks like up to inches in the Chandler area.“
As for the rain, according to the Maricopa County Flood Control District , the amount varied throughout the metroplex and Maricopa County. While some areas had totals below half an inch, most of the impacts came from north Phoenix, east Mesa and Apache Junction, with some areas exceeding 2.5 inches.
According to the National Weather Service, storms “developed“ across much of the valley’s foothills and uplands early Wednesday morning, creating the potential for strong gusty winds, heavy downpours, frequent lightning and small hail .
These storms have since continued eastward, triggering multiple flash flood warnings and advisories for parts of Maricopa County.
“It looks like the prevailing activity with showers and thunderstorms will remain mostly east of Phoenix today“
