Cambodia - Khmer Rouge defectors

(3 Apr 1998) T/I: 10:00:30 Khmer Rouge defectors and Cambodian Army troops maintained control of the Preah Vihear temple above Cambodia’s northern border with Thailand on Thursday (2/4). The Khmer Rouge lost control of the temple, which it has occupied for the last four years, about a week ago. For more than 25 years, fighting has prevented tourists and civilians from visiting the site. It has been alternatively held by the warring Khmer Rouge and Cambodian government armies. The temple was built in the 11th century and consecrated to Shiva, the Hindu God of Destruction.
