This promotional film presented by Pan American Airways System, PAA, portrays attractions and landscapes of the former country of Czechoslovakia. The film was produced by Film Services London LTD. in 1972, when the Cold War was still raging. Perhaps this explains why the film avoids shots of everyday life or even many shots of the people of the nation of Czechoslovakia, and instead focuses on scenery. The film was photographed by Arthur Wooster with camera assistant Michael Evans. Shirley Cobham directed the film, and Michael Gascoyne was editor. In December of 1992, the country dissolved into two new states: The Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The film begins with footage of mountains and valleys (00:10) and a small village depicting the simple life of a farmer (00:49), where horses are used to plow cornfields (01:11). A graveyard with crosses (01:54), and a great castle (02:32). An orchestra plays music dressed in authentic historical costumes (02:42) as part of an organized pageant imitating medieval times (02:50). Buildings were made of almost completely stone, including walls, floors, and seating (03:02). Men dressed up as knights duel to win a medal (03:41). The Vltava River winds through the town of Cesky Krumlov, which has remained nearly unchanged since the 16th century (04:54). The renaissance-period castle; Cesky Krumlov Castle evolving from a Gothic architectural style to Baroque (05:32). The town of Carlsbad was named by Emperor Charles IV, king of Bohemia, in the 14th century (06:09). In the 19th century an elaborate plumbing system was devised when Carlsbad was a popular destination for among others King Edward VII and The German Emperor Wilhelm II (06:17). The rich landscapes of Czechoslovakia were an inspiration for musicians like Bedrich Smetana (07:42). Beethoven also lived and composed music in the city on The Vltava River; Prague (07:59). Mozart also walked in the courtyards of Prague (07:59), and students of music honor his music during lectures (08:57). Beer houses is an attraction in Prague enjoyed by all (10:01). At the famous U Fleků beer house, they sell a special brown beer, served in the old Prague since 1499 (10:17). The construction of the St Vitus Cathedral began in the 14th century and lasted until 1929 (11:22). This promotional film ends with a PAA aircraft taking off (13:21).
