Niger Junta Revokes Military Cooperation With US, Eyes Strong Russian Ties To Counter Terrorism
Niger’s ruling military junta on March 16 announced that it was breaking off “with immediate effect“ its military cooperation agreement with the US. Abdramane also said that the presence of US troops in Niger “is illegal and violates all the constitutional and democratic rules.” The declaration came just a day after a senior US delegation left Niger following a three-day visit to renew contact with the military junta. The US has some 1,000 troops in Niger at a desert drone base, named Air Base 201, built near Agadez in central Niger at a cost of over $100 million. The junta also took a hard line against former colonial power France, forcing the withdrawal of French troops in place for nearly a decade. Watch the video to find out more.
