Marc-André Hamelin - Étude No. 6 in D minor ’Omaggio a Scarlatti’

Full name: ’Esercizio per pianoforte, Omaggio a Domenico Scarlatti’ Pf: Marc-André Hamelin; Kioi Hall, Tokyo; March 17, 2002 Performance videos: ----- “Domenico Scarlatti’s 555 keyboard sonatas constitute a body of work replete with marvelous invention, and it is remarkable that, given its great size, it displays such amazing variety. Yet, inevitably perhaps, there are recurring mannerisms and to someone like myself who is easily given to lampooning, these are very easy to make fun of. Those endeared to these sonatas should not in the least take offense at what I’ve done here; I can assure them that this is a purely affectionate tribute. Let’s just say I exaggerated a few things! One feature of this little piece is that its occasionally rather acrobatic nature adds a humorous visual dimension to any live performance, a dimension which will of course be lost in a recording.“ . ----- Buy Hamelin’s performances of the études here:
