YouTube Shock Jock Eric Wells Records Folks On The Edge
As my subscribers know, from time to time I do personal video interviews. I get a lot of requests but don’t have the time to take on most of them. Eric Wells interested me because he is attempting to capture the reality of people the mainstream never sees and when they do, doesn’t usually understand. The culture that Eric is capturing is one that I don’t understand either.
Eric Wells is a 22-year-old YouTuber studying psychology. He records lengthy and blunt interviews with rappers, porn stars, prostitutes, and man-on-the-street interviews with people from an inner-city culture that he has come to know. He contacted me to do an interview of me and I said that I would do it as long as I could also ask him questions which as you can see in this video, I did.
Eric has found a video interviewing style that to me at least, is a bit like a young Howard Stern. Although he does not talk about himself much as Howard does, the people that he interviews clearly feel comfortable being themselves around him and sharing their truths as they feel them.
I asked him a few questions that were difficult to answer about the the culture that he is recording and I found his answers interesting and a bit wise beyond his years.
I am personally not a rapper enthusiast so I did not spend much of my time during the interview asking him about that aspect of his work. But his interviews with women in the porn industry and women prostitutes was unlike anything that I have ever seen or heard on YouTube or on terrestrial radio.
A “shock jock“ is a radio broadcaster or talk show host who uses humor, satire and provocative language to entertain or shock their audience. They are known for pushing the boundaries of what is considered appropriate or tasteful in order to captivate their listeners and generate controversy.
Howard Stern is one of the most famous shock jocks. He started in the industry in the 1970s and has made a career out of his controversial and explicit style. His shows often feature discussions on sexual topics, contentious political issues, and personal attacks or outrageous stunts targeting celebrities or other public figures.
Some of the most successful shock jocks in addition to Howard Stern include:
Don Imus: Known for his morning show “Imus in the Morning,“ Imus was a key figure in the shock jock industry until his death in 2019. His controversial remarks often got him into trouble, leading to several suspensions during his career.
Rush Limbaugh: A prominent conservative radio host, Limbaugh was known for his controversial opinions and heated rhetoric. His show, “The Rush Limbaugh Show,“ was one of the highest-rated talk radio shows in the United States for many years until his death in 2021.
Opie and Anthony: Hosts of the “Opie and Anthony“ show, Gregg “Opie“ Hughes and Anthony Cumia were known for their provocative humor and the controversy their show often stirred up.
Bubba the Love Sponge: Born Todd Clem. He legally changed his name to his radio moniker. His show features explicit content and has often been the subject of controversy.
