Hey guys! I’m really excited to share this sunflower piece with you! Originally I was thinking to make it a wall hanging then imagined it as a cute large coaster for pots, etc. and then thought about how it could be both. This might be one of my favourite pieces to date and I hope you guys enjoy it too. Let’s get started!
I am usually able to write all the steps in the description but it is capped at 5000 spaces so I am not able to fit it all in. I’m going to leave the main instructions here but the full instructions are spoken in the tutorial and subtitles are available as well.
Sunflower Petals
Cut 6 pieces of 3mm mustard string. Each will be a different length, 25 ft, 24 ft, 23 ft, 20 ft, 17 ft and 15 ft. Fold the 25 ft piece in half to find the centre and pin the middle of it to your cork board. Attach the remaining pieces using vertical double half hitch knots in this order - 15 ft piece, 23 ft piece, 17 ft piece, 24 ft piece and 20 ft piece. Follow along as I show you how to tie your vertical double half hitch knots.
Repeat that process with the remaining string. I’ll show you two more times.
Here is what it should look like. Now we can start to make our petals on either side of these knots. Use the second cord from the right as your filler cord and tie a row of dhhks working to the left. Use the third cord from the right as your filler cord and tie a row of dhhks working to the left. Use the fourth cord from the right as your filler cord and tie a row of dhhks working to the left. Use the fifth cord from the right as your filler rod and tie one dhhk working to the left.
We have created one half of the petal. Now we will work our knots to the right to create the second half of the petal.
We have now created one petal. I’ll create one more petal with you but before I do that I thought it would be helpful to show you that the first two columns of hitches that we created were the first row of knots for the petal that we created on the left and also started another petal on the right. If you take away this column then this is one petal.
Here’s what your flower petals should look like once complete. Now I’ll show you how to connect the two sides. The first thing we will do is connect these two filler cords together. Flip your work over and use a tapestry needle to thread the string through the back of the knots as I am doing here. Now the two sides are connected. The next step is to glue these two sides together. Add a bit more glue to the back if you think that is necessary and then cut off the excess string.
Centre of Sunflower
One 7 ft piece and seven 6 ft pieces of 3mm hot chocolate string
7 ft piece of string is your filler cord. Attach your cords using reverse cow hitch knots. Here are the steps I used:
Attach 3 6 ft pieces of string to your filler cord
Tie 2 dhhks
Add 6 ft string, tie 2 dhhks
Add, 2 dhhks
Add, 2 dhhks
Add, 6 dhhks
Add, 10 dhhks
Add, 2 dhhks
Add, 6
Add, 2
Add, 15
Add, 13
Add, 2
Add, 6
Add, 12
Add, 16
Add, 10
Add, 12
Add, 4
Here is how I will connect the two pieces. Make 2 more sunflowers.
Stem
2 6 inch pieces, 1 6 ft piece
We will make a hook with the shorter pieces first. These will be added to the 3 ft piece to hang the bottom two sunflowers off of. Follow along as I show you how to make the hook. For the 3 ft piece, bend the top of it like this so that we can add it to the top sunflower.
2 8 ft pieces, one 42 ft piece of 3mm sage string
Use the 8 ft pieces in 3 ft wire as your filler cords and 42 ft piece as your working cord.
Tie spiral knots until your knots measure 9 inches long. Attach wire with glue. Tie spiral knots until your knots measure another 14 inches down. Attach wire with glue. Tie spiral knots until your knots measure another 15 inches down.
The best way to hang it on the wall is to attach the top of a petal on the wall, attach the stem to the top sunflower here and then attach the two remaining sunflowers on the hooks like this. Attach your sunflowers and hang your piece on the wall! Ideally a wall in your kitchen so that you can use the sunflowers as coasters if you wish to! Hope you guys enjoyed this one. Thanks so much for watching.
