US Representative Ilhan Omar calls vote to censure Rachida Tlaib ‘glaring hypocrisy’
Democratic representative Ilhan Omar criticised a vote passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday to censure Democratic representative Rachida Tlaib over her statements on the Israel-Palestine war.
Omar said that the vote showed “glaring hypocrisy” and highlighted how Republican representative Max Miller boasted about “turning Gaza into a parking lot” on television without any repercussions.
The censure measure was pushed by Republican representative Rich McCormick, who said Tlaib promoted “antisemitic rhetoric” and said she had “levied unbelievable falsehoods about our greatest ally, Israel, and the attack on October 7“.
Tlaib faced a new barrage of criticism last week when she defended “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, a slogan calling for freedom for Palestinians from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Pro-Israel voices argue the slogan is a call for the destruction of Israel.
234 representatives, including 22 Democrats, voted in favour of the measure while 188 representatives voted against it.
