VL86F (ВЛ86Ф) locomotive test run in Finland, May 1987

This rare video is from one of the VL86F test runs made between Ilmala and Riihimäki in Southern Finland in May, 1987. VL86F locomotive was built 1985-1986 in Novocherkassk, Soviet Union. In November 1986 it was brought to Finland for final changes in the frequency converters and their control as they had been designed and manufactured by Strömberg in Finland. The locomotive had asynchronous motors fed by thee-phase inverter. The rectifier was also pulse width modulated (PWM) with almost sinusoidal line current and cosφ was one. Moreover, the rectifier made it possible to feed the braking energy back to electric network.
