Erik Satie ~1887~ Sarabande n°3

With his Sarabandes, Satie develop an harmonic and contrapuntal language which will be a landmark in the history of music and shall partially influence Debussy, Ravel, and a part of the twentieth century French school. Satie’s biographers believe that the composer was partially influenced by the unresolved ninth chords of the prelude to the comic opera “Le Roi malgré lui“ (The reluctant king) by the French composer Emmanuel Chabrier, which Satie attended in 1887 and whose music had positively shattered. During another performance of this opera, a fire broke out and caused many casualties. Satie was nearly lynched by the mob because he cared little for the wounded and repeated insistently: “This is a tragedy for Chabrier, off to a good start for a big hit ...“
