So, you thought Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5 had impressive 3D audio? Well are you in for quite the surprise, then.
I’ve been making April Fools’ videos since 2018 with the Postal 2 video and this year, the tradition continues with Spider-Man 2 for the PC. Whereas Spider-Man 2 on the PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox was a beloved open-world superhero game by Treyarch, this Unreal Engine 2 knockoff by Fizz Factor has become infamous over the years. I first heard about it as a kid when I got the BradyGames strategy guide and saw that there was actually an entire second walkthrough featuring an exclusive villain (Puma) and a bizarre-looking Mysterio level. I had always wondered what the alternate Spider-Man 2 version was like until over a decade later when I watched tehsnakerer’s review on it. That was when I learned the harsh truth about the PC version.
Now that I’ve finally played Spider-Man 2 PC for myself, I can honestly say that it is one of the worst games I have ever played. It’s shovelware of the lowest caliber, with mind-numbingly dull gameplay and cheap production values that make even those “Rope Hero“ Android games look Insomniac-quality. How is it that the web-swinging, wall-crawling, and combat mechanics are actually worse than in the Neversoft game on PS1? For that matter, why couldn’t they just port the real Treyarch game to PC? Both the first and third movie tie-in games got ported, even if they lacked some graphical effects from the console versions.
I know this interior lab level looks like a boring demonstration, but I assure you: this was probably the high point of the game. It’s also the only real level that uses ambient point-source sound objects. I can’t tell if the 3D positional audio is less accurate than Shrek 2 on the same engine, or if it’s just this game’s bizarre camera.
