J.S. Bach: Sheep May Safely Graze from Hunting Cantata, BWV 208 - (arr. ) – Mateusz Kowalski
J. S. Bach’s Aria Schafe können sicher weiden from the Hunting Cantata BWV 208 is one of the pieces I’ve always wanted to record. Luckily for me, Kohei Minami made a wonderful arrangement of that masterpiece. The character of the music somehow suits perfectly the post-Christmas and pre–New Year’s Eve melancholy.
The cantata, known also as the Birthday Cantata, was written in 1713 for the birthday of Duke Christian, who was a keen hunter. It is Bach’s earliest surviving secular cantata.
Sheep can safely graze
where a good shepherd watches over them.
Where rulers are ruling well,
we may feel peace and rest
and what makes countries happy.
