19-Year-Old Girl Gets Arrested for DUI after Car Crash
Around 9:21 PM on March 13, 2023, Deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene of a crash involving property damage at the intersection of Hypoluxo Road and Rivermill Boulevard in Lake Worth, Florida. Her vehicle had swerved to the left, struck the curb, and stopped in the bushes. The driver was later identified as 19-year-old Samantha Maria Jones.
After Deputies arrived, they had her examined by first responders to ensure she did not need to go to the hospital. She initially denied being under the influence, but subsequently admitted to having consumed alcohol about 4 hours earlier. Since Samantha seemed to display signs of intoxication, Deputies afforded her an opportunity to perform voluntary field sobriety exercises after she was cleared by the first responders.
The field sobriety exercises included the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, Walk and Turn test, One Leg Stand test, Finger to Nose test, and the recitation of the alphabet. When performing the HGN test, Deputies observed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees in both eyes. During the Walk and Turn test, Samantha was unable to walk in a straight line.
For the One Leg Stand test, Samantha put her foot down before she was told to do so and continued to use her arms for balance. Samantha also failed to accurately perform the Finger to Nose test, though she did complete the recitation of the alphabet without issue. Based on her eventual admission to consuming alcohol, her lack of balance and fine motor coordination, and the Deputies’ suspicion of intoxication, Samantha was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Upon searching her car, Deputies found a bottle of Crown Royal Apple next to the keys.
Samantha was placed in handcuffs and transported to the jail, where she agreed to take a breathalyzer test. Her Intoxilyzer results indicated a BAC of % and %, which were both nearly twice the legal limit of %. After the breathalyzer test, Samantha agreed to waive her Miranda rights and answered most of the Deputy’s questions regarding the incident. She was subsequently processed and released with a court date after the mandatory 8-hour holding period.
