’The East is Red’ is a revolutionary communist song written during the Second Sino-Japanese War and adapted from a Shaanxi folk song about love. Its lyricist, Li Youyuan, allegedly got inspiration from witnessing the sun rising in the early morning. The song praises Chairman Mao Zedong and the Communist Party of China as being the guide towards the liberation and happiness of the Chinese masses.
