On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, the PBS video series Front and Center filmed a special performance with Irish singer-songwriter Hozier. In anticipation of his sophomore release, entitled Wasteland, Baby! (which dropped today, March 1, 2019), the set featured tracks never before played to an audience, as well as standouts from the artist’s eponymous debut LP.
The audience was treated to performances of “Nina Cried Power” (the lead off single from Wasteland, Baby!), “To Be Alone“, “Movement“, “Almost (Sweet Music)“, “Jackie and Wilson“, “NFWMB“, “Would That I”, and “Take Me To Church“, to name a few.
Personally, I found the first time performances of “Wasteland, Baby!” and “Dinner & Diatribes” mesmerizing for completely different reasons. The title track from the forthcoming album featured Hozier on acoustic guitar. Lyrically, the piece was comforting and romantic, despite the eminent doom awaiting the narrative’s lovers. Just listen to the opening lines – “all the fear and the fire of the end of the world / happens each time a boy falls in love with a girl”. On the other hand, “Dinner & Diatribes” was very dynamic and included full participation from the band to work the crowd up. This piece definitely came to life in the live setting, and it was enjoyable to witness from the audience.
Of songs already released, I was delighted by “Cherry Wine” and “Shrike“. For the former, only Hozier took the stage with his acoustic guitar in hand. The richness and power of his voice, combined with the gentle finger-picking on guitar, made the room fall absolutely silent. “Shrike” happens to be my favorite of the newer tracks, so I was hoping to hear it live. Hearing the emotion behind the loss of love, with verses like “I’d no idea on what ground I was founded / all of that goodness is going with you now / then when I met you, my virtues uncounted / all of my goodness is going with you now”, I was incredibly immersed in the haunting story. The instrumental bridge between the second chorus and third verse notably featured violin and organ, which added depth to the sound and complemented Hozier’s lead vocal.
I couldn’t write this review without giving credit to the marvelous musicians that joined Hozier on stage and significantly contributed to the electric energy throughout the night. All provided backing vocals, and their voices blended beautifully with one another. I also want to give a special shout out to the ladies on stage who rocked; as a female, it was inspiring to see a talented band made up equally of men and women.
