This film, the second part of “Causes and Immediate Effects of the First World War“, displays events such as the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the Armistice of the Western Front and the Paris Peace Conference. It opens with images of a map noting the areas affected by the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (:07). This was a treaty signed on March of 1918 between Soviet Russia and the Central Powers. This followed the Armistice on the Eastern front in 1917. German soldiers climb out of dug out trench positions (:37). The army was victorious in the east and went on the offense in the west. General John Pershing (:48) in France. They were successful in slowing the German drive. Marshal Foch (:58), of the combined Allied armies calls for all fronts to attack. Sentry guns blaze from trenches (1:08). This forced the Germans to withdraw. The French Renault FT-17 light tank appears (1:16). American troops relieve Allied forces already dug in (1:18). Foot soldiers ready weapons, moving rapidly from trenches (1:26). Bulgaria surrendered on September 29th and Turkey signed an armistice on October 31st. Austria-Hungary pulled out on November 4th. Prisoners of War (1:42) march on camera. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin (1:45) sits within the Pariser Platz. Germans scurry across screen as they were faced with starvation due to the British blockade (1:48). November 9th led to revolution as Kaiser Wilhelm II fled to Holland due to fear of the German revolutionaries. Civilians celebrate in the street as on November 11, 1918 an armistice was signed by the new German Republic as they met Marshal Foch’s campaign (2:03). The Armistice on the Western front was the first step to ending the war. Crowds celebrate the end of the four year war in front of the Arc de Triomphe on the banks of the Seine (2:08). President Wilson prepares to sail to France (2:16) in December in order to conduct negotiations for the US. His Fourteen Points were the foundation for the armistice. The USS George Washington (2:24) delivered the President. They arrive at the Palace of Versailles (2:35). The interior the palace crammed with statesmen follow (2:39). The first meeting of the Paris Peace Conference began on January 18th 1919 (2:43) which would lead to the Treaty of Versailles. Wilson pushed for the League of Nations (2:49). Secret treaties threatened Wilson’s ideals. Lloyd George of Britain (3:12), Vittorio Emanuele Orlando of Italy, Georges Clemenceau of France and Wilson made up the “Big Four”. Vittorio withdrew (3:19). The Treaty of Versailles (3:23) signed on July 28th, 1919. Treaty’s effects (3:31). Germany lost its colonies (3:56). The western front of Germany (4:08) was restored to France and Belgium. Germans demilitarize the left bank of the Rhine (4:26). The Polish Corridor was created to give the Polish access to the sea (4:46). German debt was also to be paid to Allied forces (5:25) in a sum of 31 billion dollars. Wilson stands under a sleek top hat on his return voyage from France (5:45). Edith Bolling Galt Wilson stands next to her husband and President (5:49). Wilson tours the country determining public opinion (5:55). Congress rejected the treaty and the League of Nations. Other treaties such as the Treaties of St. Germaine, Neuilly and Trianon dealt with Austria-Hungry and Bulgaria (6:13). Czechoslovakia (6:18) and Yugoslavia declared their independence (6:46). Millions Hungarians were alienated from their homelands (7:31). Romania expanded (7:42). Turkey (8:23). Due to the treaty of Sevres the country was left with a little more land than Anatolia. Rising Turkish Nationalists (8:30) refused to accept this. Wounded soldiers are removed from a ship by litter as Greece was forced to go to war with Turkey (8:35). The treaty of Lausanne was drawn in 1923 as Greece could not beat back Turkey (8:43). Territories affected by this treaty (8:59). Palestine was delivered to England (9:02). Iraq was formed by the signing of the treaty (9:17). Summer of 1923 led to a new Europe. Stalin and his armies are pictured (9:32). Benito Mussolini (9:37) roars at supporters as conflict continued to brew between powerful nations. Hitler appears at (9:44) as the stage for WW2 began. International Geographic Pictures (10:06).
