Black Oil Beetle Meloe proscarabaeus courtship 5 March 2012, Devon, England

During courtship the male Black Oil Beetle Meloe proscarabaeus mounts the female then grips her antennae with his hooked antennae. Once mated the male is dislodged from the females’ back and is then dragged behind her while mating lasts - in this case for 5 hours!
