L’incoronazione di Poppea
Opera in three acts
Claudio Monteverdi’s “L’incoronazione di Poppea“ represents a departure from allegorical and mythical elements towards a historical theme: the love affair between the Roman Emperor Nero and his lover Poppea. This masterpiece premiered at Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo in 1642, and has become the epitome of Venetian opera.
In 2017, marking the 450th anniversary of opera pioneer Claudio Monteverdi’s birth, renowned Monteverdi expert Sir John Eliot Gardiner brought new life to L’incoronazione di Poppea at Venice’s iconic Teatro La Fenice. This production celebrates Monteverdi’s genius, highlighting the groundbreaking creativity of its form, the richness of its harmonies, and the expressive diversity of its melodies.
