Stay tuned for the latest game videos ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤ The Siege of Setenil was a fifteen-day siege that occurred in 1484 when King Fernando II of Aragon and an army from the Christian kingdoms of Castile, Leon, and Aragon besieged the Emirate of Granada’s fortress of Setenil in southern Spain. The terrifying fortress was hard to take with siege engines, so King Fernando decided to use an artillery train provided by his wife Queen Isabella of Castile to take the walls. The siege was a success, and the Christian capture of Setenil paved the way for the conquest of Granada in 1492. The struggle against Moorish occupation of Spanish territories was old even before the famed “Reconquista“. With the coming of the 15th century, intolerance against Jews, heretics and Muslims began to rise dramatically throughout the Spanish kingdom. Adding this, crusading was back in favor with the papacy, thus the war against Muslim Granada was viewed favorably by many Christians, with taxes being raised and volunteers urged to fight under the banners of the Spanish states Castile and Aragon. With the Christians’ renewed vigor towards the Reconquista, it came as little surprise that the Muslims fought for the jihad, a holy war in defense of their homeland. This warlike state stagnated into cross border raids and piracy with the border becoming a no man’s land. All this was about to change with the marriage of Isabella of Castile to Ferdinand of Aragon in 1469. With the Spanish states united and focused towards destroying the Emirate of Granada, its continuing existence viewed as an insult to the Catholic Church, Queen Isabella zealously exhorted her husband to launch a fresh wave of the Reconquista and work his way to the capital of Granada, leaving no enemy settlements behind him. In the year 1484 he faced the fortress of Setenil, sitting on its rocky crag. King Fernando led the Spanish efforts on the field, fighting at the head of a large Christian army. This army did not have siege weapons; King Fernando instead relied upon the artillery train provided by his wife, Queen Isabella. Fernando sought to remove yet another Moorish fortress, keeping to his policy of leaving no enemies behind him as he moved towards the Moors’ capital. He built a small artillery emplacement outside Setenil’s walls and used them to lay waste to the defenses, destroying the walls at range and hastening the Moors’ demise. The Moors had ample crossbowmen and artillery behind the castle walls, ensuring that the Christians would not enter the city without considerable losses or a tough fight, and the Christians decided to rush the walls quickly. With little regard for his own safety, King Fernando personally led the assault, and the Spanish forces stormed the city on the fifteenth day of the siege, putting an end to Moorish resistance in the city.
