Viking Music • (Norns Invocation Chant) Varðlokur

Image generated with Midjourney 02 Varðlokur (Invocation Chant) Sometimes the völvas could make contact with the Norns, female spirits from Norse mythology, in order to know the future. Three of them are the main ones, known by the names Urðr (or Urd, “what has happened,“ fate), Verðandi (or Verdandi, “what is happening now“), and Skuld (“what should happen, or is necessary to happen“). The Norns live beneath the roots of Yggdrasil, the world tree at the center of the cosmos, where they weave the tapestries of destinies and water the ash tree with the waters and clay from the well of Urd, so it does not lose its greenness or decay. Each person’s life is a thread on their loom, and the length of each thread represents the duration of that person’s life. In the Varðlokur ritual, the seeress chants a repetitive, rhythmic, and soothing song to induce a trance state. It can be translated as “witch’s chant“ or “incantation chant,“ necessary to receive the wisdom that supernatural beings bestow and to have the capacity to better understand the inner workings of magic.
