The city is often called “the cultural capital of Russia“ for its rich history, shining palaces and world-class museums. Established in 1703 by Emperor Peter the Great, it was the capital of the Russian Empire for more than 200 years. Due to the selfless work of restorers and citizens, the city that survived the siege in 1941–44, is back to its glory again.
