📃 Оригинальное описание:
More than 12,000 people killed, thousands more injured, at least 7 million forced from their homes and an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe have not been enough to convince the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and their rivals, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end hostilities. Almost eight months since Sudan’s civil war broke out, the international community’s efforts to broker peace have failed, while various regional powers’ efforts to pursue their own interests have exacerbated the conflict.
In an exclusive interview with African Stream in our Nairobi office, Pan-African scholar PLO Lumumba said the African Union should have been more decisive when the deadly power-struggle first broke out. He told us that, as the year draws to an end, a return to normality now depends on the level of support both sides can obtain from their foreign patrons.
The United Arab Emirates has a well documented relationship with the RSF, while Egypt has historic ties with the SAF. In other words, Sudan’s fate could now be in the hands of foreign powers who are undeterred by the suffering of millions of ordinary Sudanese citizens.
