The perfect balance between simplification in painting without uncontrollably falling into abstraction. The landscape in the painting creates an impression of “nothing excessive,“ enticing with its expansiveness and simplicity. Here’s how the artist Anatoli Gostev recalls it: ⭐⭐⭐ “On the shores of Lake Staffel, in the foothills of the Alps, not far from Munich - Murnau. Here is a house where Wassily Kandinsky lived for five years with the German painter Gabriele Münter. Now this house is called “Münterhaus,“ but it has another name - “Russian house“. Here, guests included: Alexei Jawlensky and Marianne Werefkin, Franz Marc and August Macke, Paul Klee and Heinrich Campendonk - the cradle of the “Blue Rider“ movement, where a new vision of painting was born. After parting ways with Kandinsky, Münter returned to this house and lived in it until the end of her days. Many of Kandinsky’s works remained with her. Later, risking her life, she saved them in the basement of this house from the Nazis, and then donated them to the Munich gallery in the Lenbachhaus, along with some of her own paintings and those of other “Blue Rider“ representatives. Wandering through the surroundings of Staffelsee, I felt their presence in this place. And it was there that a rethinking occurred: from copying nature to feeling the content, to abstraction, and to conveying the essence of sensations.
