The memorial complex was built in June 2009 and is dedicated to railway workers and military builders who ensured the uninterrupted supply of the Stalingrad Front with military supplies during the Battle of Stalingrad. On February 3, 2008 in Volgograd in the panorama museum “Battle of Stalingrad“ as part of the celebration of the 65th anniversary of victory in the Battle of Stalingrad, a meeting of the Council of Veteran Railwaymen of the Volgograd Branch of the Volga Railway with the President of the Russian Railways Company Vladimir Yakunin took place. At this meeting, a decision was agreed to create a memorial complex “Military Echelon“ from a steam locomotive and pre-war wagons as a monument to railway workers. In 2008, an Er steam locomotive was found at the Krasny Oktyabr plant, which had previously been at the Chir station’s reserve base for a long time. It was subject to remelting, but in exchange for remelting another steam locomotive was given, which could not be restored, and this one was sent to Saratov for reconstruction, which took almost a year. After partial restoration, this steam locomotive was transported to Volgograd by a trailed method. The work on the restoration of the rolling stock and its installation was carried out by employees of the enterprises of the Volgograd branch of the Volga Railway. In mid-June 2009, the restored steam locomotive and four carriages were installed on a pedestal with rails near the Battle of Stalingrad panorama museum. The ceremonial opening of the memorial complex “Military Echelon“ took place on June 24, 2009 during the visit of the V Assembly of Chiefs of Russian Railways to Volgograd. In 2020, for the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, a new exhibit appeared in the memorial complex - an ambulance car. During the war, such cars were part of the ambulance trains that evacuated the wounded to the rear. It is planned to equip an exposition inside the carriage, which will tell about how the wounded were transported and provided medical assistance. The “Military Echelon“ is a stylized military train, which includes a steam locomotive with a tender, a covered wagon “teplushka“, a tank car for transporting oil and two universal platforms. In 2020, the two universal platforms were replaced by an ambulance car. In addition, a semaphore is installed in front of the train, and a dispenser for refueling with water is located next to the steam locomotive cabin. Steam locomotive Er 743-64. The steam locomotive was built at the Lugansk steam locomotive plant in 1935, factory number 4711. During the war, it was operated on the Ryazan-Ural and Stalingrad railways. During the restoration, the steam locomotive was given the number Er 739-99, which had already been assigned to another locomotive, therefore, after the installation of the steam locomotive, it was renumbered as Er 743-64. A tender from the Er 743-31 steam locomotive is installed in the coupling with it. Two-axle covered wagon. The so-called “teplushka“ was used to transport Red Army personnel to the area of ​​the Battle of Stalingrad.
