LIVE: Demonstrators rally in Berlin against income inequality and for affordable housing

Demonstrators gather in Berlin on Saturday, September 11, to protest against income inequality and an alleged shortage of affordable housing in Germany. The protest organisers are demanding a nationwide ’Mietendeckel,’ or rental cap. They have been campaigning for a referendum to expropriate the city’s largest private landlords, taking place in Berlin on September 26, the same day as the federal election. In April, Germany’s highest court ruled that Berlin’s rental cap was unconstitutional. The rent cap came into force in February 2020, freezing rents for the majority of Berlin’s flats at their June 2019 level for five years. It was a flagship policy of the city’s governing coalition of the centre-left Social Democrats, the Greens, and the far-left Die Linke parties.
