Kelis - ’Milkshake’ FreQ Nasty’s HipHall Remix 2004 [2011 remaster]

My official ’Milkshake’ remix for Virgin records - I am still really proud of this mix. It was before any one had really half-timed beats at this tempo in the electronic music world as we’re so used to now with dubstep. And dubstep itself had yet to mutate from experimental garage into the form we all recognize now. On this remix I was influenced by Jamaican Dancehall music and Timbaland’s hiphop beats but I wanted to add the weight of electronic production to the mix to create a slower heavier groove. So I cut the current dance floor tempo in half and voila – another FreQ Nasty record that didn’t fit in any other Dj’s set at the time 😂. Actually I lie - apparently it got played a lot in the West London Broken Beat scene which loved the syncopated beats and sexy psychedelic soul vocal. UK vocalist Spoonface graced another of my productions dropping a tear out verse with his distinctive ’sing jay’ style and London accent adding to the unmistakable UK Bass Music flavor. Bigups Spoon! This was a project I was really excited to be involved with. The Neptunes-produced original is a landmark tune now and a big departure from the r’n’b and hip-hop of that time. When I got the song parts from the record company (on DAT – Digital Audio Tape… a long dead digital format) and listened to them, even I was surprised at how out of tune that lead synth was… and they had the balls to leave it like that and rely on vibe rather than doing the ‘right’ thing and trying to retune it. And this is why the Neptunes were head and shoulders above everyone else for so long. Out-of-the-box thinkers with strong traditional composing skills to hold the experiments together. No one has really filled their place. It originally appeared on the UK release of Kelis’ single ’Milkshake’ (all master recording rights owned by Virgin Records) and was available on 12“ Vinyl, CD, and download. On this version I beefed up the loudness of the master as everything has gotten so much LOUDER since 2004. I also pushed the vocal up a little. Other than that, it’s essentially it’s the same remix.
