Accounting for the Fuel Efficiency of Connected Vehicles

On June 10, 2020, the University of Michigan Energy Institute hosted a webinar on how to account for the potential fuel economy and greenhouse gas GHG reduction benefits of technologies that connect motor vehicles with one another and road environment as well as those that provide increasing levels of automated driving. Examining these effects is important for understanding how such advances might be reflected in public policies designed to reduce fuel consumption and GHG emissions. The webinar featured presentations by Aaron Hula, Technology Advisor with the U.S. EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality, and Chris Atkinson, Director of the NEXTCAR program at Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), and included an audience discussion after the presentations.
